The Georgia State Florist Association is a network of retail florists, designers, wholesalers and other industry professionals throughout the state who strive to be the best in the floral industry. Our goal is to inform, promote and educate our members so they may better their business and provide their customers with the highest quality product, design and service.
By belonging to GSFA, individuals have the opportunity to increase their skills, share their knowledge and benefit from the expertise of others. In an industry that moves and changes so rapidly, the survival and success of the florists of Georgia depends on our efforts to keep current on trends, materials and information.
Membership is open to anyone in the industry who shares our standards, ideals and goals. We invite participation and input from all our members and promote programs and workshops that will benefit professionals throughout the state and surrounding areas.
We welcome you!
GSFA provides certification through our Georgia Master Florist program and continuing education through district design programs, Convention and other opportunities. We offer scholarships to help members achieve professional goals. We enjoy fellowship, mentoring and networking with other industry professionals to help navigate today's changing floral landscape. GSFA also promotes and assists members online via Facebook and other platforms.
Established in 1985, the GMF program is a comprehensive floral training program that is valuable to beginners and seasoned florists alike. Online courses teach everything from design theory to shop management. A hands-on session ensures competency with funeral and wedding work. Certificate as a Georgia Master Florist is awarded upon passing the design test at our annual convention. The GMF serves as an approved pathway to certification and membership into the American Institute of Floral Designers (AIFD).
GSFA offers three scholarships to help educate our members. Help is available to enable them to take a floral class, study with a designer, or test for AIFD. Scholarship competition is open to all GSFA Members. Applications are submitted in the months before Convention and are awarded by the Scholarship Committee during our annual convention.
Design shows and programs are presented throughout the state by the districts. Local or nationally known designers present programs and classes throughout the year and across the state. Network and problem solve with fellow florists at district meetings. You can attend meetings in both your local and other districts. Participate in special events sponsored by the state.
The goal is to encourage experience, education and motivation. Entering a competition is invaluable for the education experience. The Designer of the Year competition is one of the highlights of the year. Held annually at convention, competitors measure themselves against design challenges and the clock. The winner displays the Cooke Cup in their shop for a year, presents a design show at the next year's convention, and wins a cash prize. They may also represent Georgia at a national competition. GSFA also holds a popular interpretive design competition called the Burton Cup. Entrants interpret a piece of art or a prompt given prior to the competition by bringing prior-made props or structures and designing floral on-site in a set time frame. The winner displays the Burton Cup Trophy for a year and wins a cash prize. Competitions may also be held within districts.
